The Feel of Freshly Laid Eggs
The other day I checked the hen house in the middle of the day and discovered some newly laid eggs. When I picked them up, they felt warm! These eggs were as fresh as eggs can get. They had never been refrigerated and hadn't been cooked yet. Each of them were a different size, shape, and color, from tan to almost-brown. There were even little bits of straw clinging to the smooth shells.
I could imagine the hen, cozy in the dark cubby she entered to feel safe, sitting on a little pile of straw and finally answering the question of what came first. How could an egg be laid without a hen?
I brought the eggs into the kitchen, added them to the containers of eggs already in the fridge and thought about how yummy they were going to taste the next morning.
