In the past, I couldn't figure out why my home state is called "Sunny California". It seemed like we had enough rainy days to discredit any "sunny" label. Well, let me tell you! I sooooo took those sunny days for granted! I have discovered that living in a not-so-sunny state takes some adjustment. For anyone who decides to try this for her/himself, here are my tips:
- It gets darker a lot earlier than you will be used to. Morning person or not, get up early! That's about the only way you will get to see more than four hours of daylight.
- You can no longer cancel plans or errands just because of rain. Seriously, you will never get anything done if you try to stick to that way of thinking.
- When you notice a bit of sun peeking through the clouds, act instantly! It might be your only chance for the next few days and it will probably only last 15 minutes. Find the one spot in the the yard that you can feel the sun shining on you and read, bask, or do that outdoor chore you have been saving for just this moment.
- Take my word for it: give up on trying to predict the weather and just assume it's going to be cold when you go out. Also, plan to bring a rain jacket every time you leave the house for the next eight months.
- One of the best parts about living in a colder, rainier state: there's finally a real reason to knit those warm accessories! Woo-hoo!! And you'll not just be able to, but will need to use those wonderful items almost every day for many months to come.
- And finally, a trick I learned from the wonderful woman I am staying with, surround yourself with beautiful, colorful things. Guaranteed to brighten up any dreary day!
After these basic adjustments, you should be able to tolerate, and probably even enjoy, your new home. I know it worked for me! :)
