Metaphor for My Transition

Rain falls
on twisted trunk, douses petals curled into bud.

Water runs in rivulets down deep furrows
of bark. Memory stretches back: terrible

storms; sunny, warm days; colorful birds visiting
branches stretching out toward the world. Rough bark protects

soft, pink insides easily injured. Strength
is waning; soon gravity’s weight will win.

Thick trunk will stretch across the ground, releasing
accumulated life for other green growth,
its girth offering a boost toward the sun.

Moisture collects in folds
of petals. A blush of color

peeks through partially-translucent
silk, yet truth remains hidden. Unknown hue, unknown shape.

Safer to stay closed and small, but desire
to reveal self to the world will prevail.

Soon, unique petals will unfurl, inviting
nectar-seekers and admirers alike.

Rainclouds inevitably drift
away and warm sunshine embraces
branches and petals equally.
